What type of Mediterranean are you?

Slavic, Hispanic or perhaps some more options

At the youthful age of 19, I donned a backpack and head to Barcelona, Spain to work for the next 10 months. I had landed myself an internship at a youth hostel, as part of something called the Leonardo da Vinci program, something you might know now as Erasmus+.

This was essentially a way of working abroad, during my business degree, and gaining credits for doing so. It wasn’t all nights out and prostitutes in dorms though (a blog for another day), but also a dissertation in Spanish at the end.

So whilst I got to have a new adventure, I was quickly swamped with the Mediterranean vibe, diet and feel.

Fast forward 10 years, and this time it was a move without European backers unfortunately, as I packed my bags permanently and moved to Croatia. I was in search of something similar to what I had in Barcelona, but things were a bit off here. They were Mediterranean for sure, with many concepts I had learnt in Spain translated, but there was another vibe.

After a recent return to Spain, that vibe check returned, and I started to think about the differences between the two sides of the Mediterranean. Expect sweeping generalisations and an outsider’s view, based on my own experiences with no intention to offend, as…
