So here we are, celebrating a third place medal like we’ve won the whole lot. But what you’ve got to remember is it isn’t just third place, but the third time since 1998 that Croatia has been on the podium. We mention 1998 because that’s the first time Croatia appeared after decades due to Yugoslavia.

The other teams to have finished in the top three in that period at least that many times are:

France (4 times, twice winners)
Germany (5 times, once winner)

“Great success!” as Borat would say. When reading Dino Vučić’s recent blogpost about the Future of Croatian Football it dawned on me. Isn’t it about time more entrepreneurs in Croatia looked to learn something from their national football team, and think about competing on the global stage.

Penetrating the EU, and beyond

When you look at that team you see a mixture of players playing both home away. Individuals like Modrić and Perišić who reached a certain top at a certain point in their career domestically, before moving to pastures new and foreign, and succeeding.
