Food is quite obviously the first thing that springs to our mind when we think of any diet, but there are some large differences here when it comes to food.

Whilst convenience and speed has dictated what and how we eat in the UK, customs and traditions still manage to rule here. Lunch remains the main meal of the day, and this in turn changes the way people work and how they structure their day.

Work isn’t a 9–5 affair, and whilst in some countries they take a large break and split the work day into two, here in Croatia they just finish earlier at around 2 or 3. This gives them enough time to cook a bigger meal, especially if there is someone at home who isn’t working who can get it ready for you — normally grandma.

In order to keep you going to this time, there’ll be some snacks earlier on in the day. This could be some nuts, fruit, homemade bread, cheese and cured meats, perhaps some pickled peppers, cucumbers or some other preserved vegetable.

This is also repeated later on in the evening, if you’re feeling peckish at night, something light to make sure your stomach doesn’t keep you awake at night. In fact some people tend…
