The joy of no history

Some roots don’t let you grow

One the of the things that seems to scare people about moving to a place, is the fact that you’re leaving something comfortable and known, to somewhere new and potentially unsettling.

They’re right. When you move everything is new, unsettling, and you probably have to find new friends, perhaps a job, somewhere to live, things to do in your free time and so on.

Going one step further, and moving to a new country means you might face a new language, culture, different ways of doing things you don’t always feel comfortable with and a possibly a whole different ballgame.

But this ballgame comes with one perk, you get to set some of your own rules. You see, when you arrive somewhere new, you too are new. There might be some assumptions and baggage because of your nationality, religion, sexual preference or disability, but there’s a lot that you lose, and gain by doing so.

No family history

Fortunately and also unfortunately, the UK is a huge place compared to Croatia. This means that neighbours might not know each other, and people have moved around a lot. Even though I come from a town of around 50,000 people, I really only knew my friends, and their families.
