Older people are boring

I’m talking about you too.

Naturally, as we get older we start to see everything in a different light. Our experiences shape who we are, for better or for worse. We feel we are more knowledgeable and able to impart our wisdom to others.

However, one thing that I don’t feel changes so much, is our attitude to older people. By older people, I’m not talking about anyone drawing their pension. I’m talking about anyone actually older than you, be it by one, five or thirty years.

There’s a sad state of affairs all over the ‘developed’ world where the older generation are often forgotten or dismissed. That is unless it’s to do with getting votes for an election, then pensions and winter fuel allowance are always high up on a party’s manifesto.

For a lot of older people, they live in isolation, with monthly visits from family, if they are lucky. Does this come from a life of thinking older people are boring and worthless?

As children

As kids, we’re probably the least ageist. Our parents are like gods who we worship, their friends — interesting people who might live a different, interesting way. Anyone in their teenagers or twenties seem so grown up and cool too. In fact, at this stage in our lives it is really just people over 70 that freak us out.
