Hiking times

New Zealand — Silly poems for your backpack

I’m a fast hiker, I know that,
I hit my pace and go, go, go.
But I was surprised when I first hiked in NZ,
That the times they stated were rather slow.

Then I got to learn, that there was more to it,
And you need 20 minutes per mile.
You’ll be walking your route, and turn the corner,
And be greeted with a huge warm smile.

They’ll definitely be a local, with such a welcome,
A hello turns to light conversation,
They’ll give you some tips, about where to go next,
And ask you how you’re enjoying your vacation.

The chat will end after five or ten minutes,
and you’ll carry on with your walk along the track.
But don’t be surprised, if a mile down the road,
You’re stop again and down your backpack.

While I travel, I enjoy writing a bit of poetry, mostly silly stuff, but all to remember the fun I had.

I publish them all on Medium, so check out my other poems here.
