I’m a strong believer that the right thoughts lead to the right actions. That to get yourself moving in the direction you want to be going, part of it is to feed yourself a certain dogma that moves you along.

I’ve tried and applied it throughout my life, as I’ve seen self-storytelling have its effect in both positive and negative ways. Recently it’s come to the fore, and reminded me of three main monologues I use.

What’s the worst that could happen?

This is one of my favourite questions that I often put to people when I see some hesitation to do something that I feel will ultimately benefit them.

Yet it is a sort of 180 from my childhood, when I was fearful of asking for things or doing things, worried of someone saying no, or looking at me in a weird way. Seriously, this event included asking for 50p to buy an ice-cream.

Fortunately I’ve mostly grown out of that now, and I am always willing to ask that tough question, suggest something a bit radical and push forward with uncomfortable areas.

When we actually think hard about this question, we mostly realise that the worst isn’t that bad. Even those ‘worst’ things that could happen have a contingency plan…
