Kenya — Silly poems for your backpack

A group of lads and a few ladies too,
Gather each day to play.
The goal to engage and support,
To keep them from going astray.

If they have boots, expect some holes,
And matching ones can be rare.
Yet without the newest Nikes or Adidas,
They still have technique and flair.

The pitch so dusty and bumpy,
Making it hard to control the ball.
But they don’t punt it long each time,
Instead short passes, a flick and a dribble.

What you don’t see on the pitch,
Is the homes from where they hail.
Nor the lives that they go through,
That would make most of us pale.

Before training though, the soup kitchen,
Where they eat two or three times each day.
The food they get here, gives them energy,
To study, work laugh and play.

The staff and the coach have bold plans,
To move them upwards and on,
To give them a chance to be the best,
Perhaps even see Kenya win AFCON.

While I travel, I enjoy writing a bit of poetry, mostly silly stuff, but all to remember the fun I had.

I publish them all on Medium, so check out my other poems here.

Please feel free to subscribe for my stories direct to your email too, I only post twice a week.
